Regional evidence and coverage

What a place on the map tells you, how ATI interprets regional weather and how to recognise the limits of a commodity claim.

Last reviewed

Regional claim review is complete for published coverage

All configured associations have direct source support. The zones remain indicative, and each record states the limits of that support.

What is supported today

ATI monitors representative regions across Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria. Every configured region and commodity has a directly supported record in the register below. Context-only and unresolved statuses remain available when future coverage does not meet that standard. All mapped zones remain indicative.

Agronomic references explain why weather conditions may matter to a crop. Those references alone do not establish that the crop is produced in a particular region. A source naming an institution or a national industry is also insufficient to prove every regional association.

What a mapped region means

The map uses administrative boundaries and representative weather monitoring points. A shaded region is planning coverage; it is not a mapped farm, a surveyed crop boundary or evidence that production occurs throughout the shaded area.

A commodity absent from the map may simply be outside ATI’s configured coverage. Absence from the map does not establish absence of production.

How a regional claim should be supported

A defensible regional claim needs a source that explicitly connects the commodity, the place and the activity being described. Production, cultivation, census-reported farm holding, wild collection, processing and a development programme are different activities and must be described separately.

The claim-level register records the following information for accepted sources and states what is still needed for contextual or unresolved associations. Source review checks the cited passage; it is not a field survey, and its date does not make the underlying observation current.

  • The exact claim, named geography and any mapping from older administrative boundaries.
  • The publisher, direct source link and supporting passage, page or table.
  • The observation period where stated, the access date and the review date.
  • The review decision, limits of support and any unresolved or conflicting evidence.

Browse regional claims

Source-supported association means an inspected publication explicitly connects the crop and region through production, cultivation, census-reported farm holding or collection. It does not establish current output, commercial scale, farm boundaries or coverage throughout the region. Open the record for the observation period and activity.

Context only covers programme areas, older geographic names, uncertain boundary mappings or historical samples. Evidence unresolved means no accepted supporting passage is attached. These statuses describe evidence strength, not crop absence or a weather risk tier.

Where to find it: PDF pp. 162–163 (printed pp. 152–153), Table 7: oilseed-crop agricultural holdings by state, major season; sesame appears as “Beeni-seed/sesame”.

Geographic interpretation: The source names the configured region. This is an administrative association, not a match to farm boundaries.

Limits: The values are weighted sample-survey estimates of households in thousands, not a census, planted area or output. Kwara’s estimate is positive but small and should not be read as evidence of commercial scale. The report file is dated 2024; the catalogue record was added in 2025. The table does not establish later activity, production throughout a state or farm locations.

How to read the weather signal

NASA POWER supplies gridded meteorological observations for representative points. ATI compares trailing 30-day rainfall and mean temperature against a 2014–2023 same-calendar-window baseline. Climate history is sampled weekly, with each observation representing a trailing 30-day window.

NORMAL, WATCH and ALERT are ATI screening tiers. Crop calendars and directional agronomic references help interpret the anomaly, but the result is not a farm measurement or a yield, production or price forecast. A stronger weather signal does not strengthen the evidence that a crop is present in the region.

Source documentation: NASA POWER: daily data documentation ↗

Coverage, freshness and confidence

The corridor overview distinguishes complete, partial and unavailable weather coverage. Missing observations must remain visible; they are not normal conditions. Use the observation date on the signal to understand how recent the underlying data is.

Corridor totals count available regional screens and ports on watch. They are not weighted by production, and ATI does not average rainfall anomalies across countries. Confidence in a weather interpretation is separate from the strength of evidence for a regional commodity association.

The configured counts below describe the scope of ATI’s monitoring. They are not counts of approved claims, farms or producing areas verified by a field survey.

Before making an operational decision

Read the date, methodology, source and limitations beside the signal. Confirm local crop timing, supplier conditions and collection access before changing procurement or transport plans.

PortWatch measures vessel-call activity and estimated trade flows. It does not establish congestion, a berth queue or the location of your shipment. Border history consists of periodic loaded-truck surveys, not current wait times. Live vessel tracking is not currently available.
